A sprawling and intensely involving memoir of contemporary life under the shadow of the mafia, Gomorrah is based on a best-selling book of the same name by Roberto Saviano, who as a result of publishing the manuscript is currently forced to live under police protection. Filmmaker Matteo Garrone says, “This is not a film about good and evil. We're showing people crushed by the [Neopolitan mafia's] system against which they can't rebel.” For thousands of Italians, this is more than a film - it's daily reality.
