This film is a "science spectacular" made by putting one camera crew to work in the 50° below zero Antarctic, stationing another in an operating room during heart surgery, and detailing a third to a research lab. where a physicist was making movies of the tungsten atom through the barrel of the world's most powerful microscope. Viewers will see a film of the atom itself, magnified three million times as it moves about on the tip of a tungsten needle.
The show's second sequence is a film report on the encampment of 17 scientists and navy men isolated at the South Pole, some 750 glacier-covered miles from tire nearest outpost of civilisation. The final portion of the film features one of the world's most skilled heart surgeons, Dr. C. Walton Lillehei, as he operates. This surgery became feasible due to the develop¬ment a mechanical substitute for the heart and lungs.
