When God is an old biker covered in girlie tattoos, reminiscing about hallucinating at a Led Zeppelin concert; when you hear "OK lift the tablets...very holy...and...ACTION", you know you are in the lap of the Gods!
The Spinal Tap of the movie world. The Making Of...And God Spoke captures perfectly the self-delusion of business dreamers whose reach perpetually exceeds their grasp.
Marvin Handleman and Clive Walton are successful 'B' movie exploitation filmmakers. Director Clive believes his films, which include Alpha Deatha De-Kappa, Nude Ninjas and Dial S for Sex, have an important and powerful message. Marvin is the small-time 'big' producer who has a misplaced sense of shrewd. They have finally gotten studio backing for a big project, a Biblical Epic, or more accurately a dramatisation of the entire Bible titled And God Spoke. In classic Making of... style, the film documents all the behind-the-scenes action and comedy involved in production, interviewing key players and covering all the pitfalls. Things start out on the wrong foot, and go from bad to worse. When pressure from upstairs - studio executives who think they are God - demands creative concessions, it will take more than a miracle to fulfil Clive and Marvin's vision of making the biggest blockbuster of all time.
The Making Of...And God Spoke, with a cast of over seventy-six speaking parts (including Eve Plumb, of Brady Bunch fame as Mrs Noah!), is a heady mix of histrionic satire and psychological slapstick that does for the low budget mockumentary what The Player did for high stakes Hollywood.
