VOYAGE TO CYTHERA

After more than three decades' exile in the Soviet Union, a declaration of political amnesty means that Spyros, an elderly Commu­nist rebel, can at last return to his homeland. Yet in doing so. he finds himself as much an out­sider as ever, deeply at odds with the post-junta culture. Reunited with his damaged, long-suffer­ing wife, denounced by his neighbours and for­mer comrades, he witnesses the comprehensive betrayal of every principle that he ever held dear; and finally, recognising that his time is past, abandons his own country, returning once more into exile.
