Adult siblings Baxter (Jason Bateman, who also directs) and Annie (Nicole Kidman) are still scarred from a traumatic childhood: their eccentric parents, Caleb (Christopher Walken) and Camille (Maryann Plunkett), are artists best known for their elaborate public hoaxes, and would force their children into participating in disturbing performance pieces (while also referring to them to them as Child A and Child B throughout their adolescence). But when Caleb and Camille go missing under mysterious circumstances, their offspring can't be sure if it's another hoax or not.
