In this Locarno Silver Leopard and DOXA Best Short Documentary award-winner, a mother and daughter recount their experiences of abuse and survival. Umbilical uses visceral, expressionistic animation to amplify the vulnerable first-person accounts of abuse, cruelty, violence and silence by director Danski Tang and her mother. This harrowing yet moving sophomore work – which was also awarded at film festivals in Iowa City, Ann Arbor and San Diego – chronicles the reverberations of trauma across generations, and the ongoing process of healing.
