SUNDAY 6 AUGUST, 5PM - SOLD OUT

Providing a uniquely Australian perspective on the biggest annual sporting event in the world, Dan Jones' documentary debut follows the fortunes of the 2005 Tour de France.

The film focuses on three Australians reporting on the world famous cycling event; two are bona fide journalists while a third appears to be making the most of a press pass to get close to the action (ironically, he ends up snagging some of the best interviews of the film). All three bring a larrikin humour to their antics, which propels the film from mere reportage to something more akin to attending a sporting event with ‘the boys'. Taking a layman-friendly approach, Detour de France introduces audiences to the nuances of the event explaining terminology, strategy and the mechanics of the race prologue and time trials.

Featuring interviews with cycling luminaries such as Lance Armstrong and Bernard Hinault, and appearances by assorted celebrities (including director Ron Howard, singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow and failed presidential candidate John Kerry), Detour de France provides a fascinating insight into a classic sporting event.

Filmmakers will be attending the festival

Director Dan Jones will introduce the session on Sunday 6 August, 5pm at ACMI. A Q&A will follow the screening.
