In the Mexican immigrant community of Huntington Park, miles and more away from the gleaming centre of Los Angeles, 15-year-olds Yolanda and Mari fall into an unlikely friendship.
Yolanda is the high achiever of the two, a girl whose strict Catholic parents see in her the family's path out of poverty, while the recently arrived Mari is rebellious, street-smart and insecure. But as a more intimate connection grows between the two, the contours of their relationship become strikingly different.
Bold, tender and warm-hearted, Mosquita y Mari is a strikingly assured, delicately textured feature debut from newcomer Aurora Guerrero.
“Filmmaker Aurora Guerrero is impressive in her first feature outing... a robust work of self-discovery for two girls at the most awkward and confusing years of their young lives, and a testament to Guerrero's storytelling prowess” - Hollywood Reporter
