MIFF Ambassador screenings are personal journeys through cinema, by incredible artists, that only happen at MIFF. For one night only, revered Australian director and MIFF Ambassador Andrew Dominik (Chopper, MIFF 2022) presents his seminal Nick Cave films in a double feature at the Astor, punctuated by an in-conversation with filmmaker Thomas M. Wright (The Stranger, MIFF 2022).
Filmed in sleek black and white, One More Time With Feeling is the first of Dominik’s documentaries about the artistic relationship between Cave and Warren Ellis. Shot in music studios in France and London, the documentary follows Cave and the Bad Seeds as they record their acclaimed, ARIA-nominated 16th album, Skeleton Tree, and chronicles the moment when Cave was struck by the tragic death of his son, Arthur. With heart-rending vulnerability, Cave’s grief is traversed through intimate performances as well as his own poetry and deeply personal voiceover.
Made during a break following production on Dominik’s upcoming Marilyn Monroe drama Blonde, This Much I Know to Be True covers the recording of two of Cave’s recent studio albums: Ghosteen (made with the Bad Seeds) and Carnage (made with Warren Ellis). Along with capturing Cave, Ellis, and their string quartet and backing singers preparing for their 2021 UK tour, the film allows audiences to witness live performances, interludes about the pair’s songwriting collaborations and Cave’s interactions with fans. This is a concert film within a making-of documentary within an artistic investigation, all kept in symphony by maestro Dominik and with a show-stopping appearance by rock legend Marianne Faithfull.
