Akira Kurosawa's visit to the 1971 festival was cancelled due to illness, however a retrospective of his films was held, consisting of eight Australian premieres. Other highlights of the festival included The Conformist (Bernardo Bertolucci), Dodes'kaden (Kurosawa), Une femme douce (Robert Bresson), Kes (Ken Loach), The Wild Child (François Truffaut), Ramparts of Clay (Jean-Louis Bertucelli), and Even Dwarfs Started Small (Werner Herzog)
