State Library Victoria was established in 1854, making it Australia's oldest public library and one of the first free libraries in the world. It is also Australia’s busiest library and, as of 2018, the world's fourth-most-visited library.

As a MIFF 2023 venue, please note that:

  • Main entry is via Russell Street (Entry 6)
  • An accessible entrance is available via La Trobe Street (Entry 5)

Accessibility

SLV has six (6) entrances, with three (3) main entrances: the Swanston Street entrance (Entry 1), the La Trobe Street entrance (Entry 5) and the Russell Street entrance (Entry 6). All MIFF events will enter through the Russell Street entrance and the La Trobe Street entrance for step-free/wheelchair access.

Russell Street entrance (Entry 6):

  • Entry is via a small staircase from Russell Street into the Readings Bookshop on Level 2. From the Readings Bookshop, you can continue into the Redmond Barry Reading Room through two doors across from the entry stairway.
  • The Cowen Gallery is located through the Redmond Barry Reading Room on the far side of the room and access is step-free/wheelchair accessible. There is a staircase and an elevator in the Cowen Gallery that can be used to access the La Trobe Reading Room or The Dome on Level 3.
  • The Ian Potter Queen’s Hall is located down a small staircase across from the La Trobe Reading Room. For step-free/wheelchair access, there is an elevator located next to the staircase on the far side of the La Trobe reading room. This elevator is taken to the ground level Welcome Zone and a secondary elevator is used from the Welcome Zone for step-free access to Ian Potter Queen’s Hall.

La Trobe Street entrance (Entry 5):

  • Entry is via a ramp on La Trobe Street, near the corner of Russell Street, into a long hallway the opens into the Readings Bookshop.
  • For entry into the Redmond Barry Reading Room, there are two doorways on the right side, when entering from Latrobe Street.
  • The Cowen Gallery is located through the Redmond Barry Reading Room on the far side of the room and access is step-free/wheelchair accessible. There is a staircase and an elevator in the Cowen Galley that can be used to access the La Trobe Reading Room or The Dome on Level 3.
  • The Ian Potter Queen’s Hall is located down a small staircase across from the La Trobe Reading Room. For step-free/wheelchair access, there is an elevator located next to the staircase on the far side of the La Trobe reading room. This elevator is taken to the ground level Welcome Zone and a secondary elevator is used from the Welcome Zone for step-free access to Ian Potter Queen’s Hall.

Bathrooms, including accessible bathrooms, are located in close proximity to the La Trobe Street entrance, the Cowen Gallery and the Ian Potter Queen’s Hall.
